Are Some Twitter Avatar’s Better Than Others? Yes

March 12th, 2009 by Jerell | Filed under Avatar.

Absolutely you can post any Avatar that you want to represent yourself, or use the default Twitter Avatar.  However some Avatars are better than others if you want to make friends on Twitter.   This is due to that the Twitter default doesn’t let other people know who you are, and if one of the purposes of social media is to get to know real people, then this is best to use a real photo of yourself.  So what type of photo?  One that best shows you as the nice person you really are.  I don’t like meeting mean people, a flower (though they are pretty to look at), Marge Simpson or any other cartoon figure.  Why? Because although you many love Royalty Roses, it’s kind of difficult to pick out you or Marge Simpson when I go to a tweet up and introduce myrself.  I do have a lot of friends who I have met who don’t follow this , but a great thing about Twitter is that at the end of the day it’s your decision how you want to represent yourself.  Only you now best.

So true! I definitely consider a person’s avatar when making a decision to follow because it says a lot about the person. I love seeing all of the smiling faces in TweetDeck; it makes conversations seem more genuine. Logos are only acceptable for businesses, and even the best combine a face and the logo in a creative way.

There is one person I am following because he is in my local network. Funny thing is, the guy is positioning himself as a social media guru, but his avatar is his stern, scowling face and he doesn’t look at all friendly. I’m sure he just thinks he looks like a serious thinker, but it is very off-putting. Every time he pops up in my stream I am so tempted to DM him and tell him he really needs an avatar that is more “approachable”!

It’s not JUST a matter of representing yourself, either. When you’re one star in a sea of stars, whether or not your avatar stands out plays a factor in whether or not your tweet is even read.

Especially when you’re talking a trending topics feed. Go have a look and see what I mean. When presented with a hundred tweets on one subject, which ones draw YOUR eye?
